How to Learn Photography Fast (The 5-Step Roadmap)

Here's what no one tells photography beginners when it comes to learning photography, since most videos teach you the buttons, like... ISO, aperture, and shutter speed.

Am I right? But what they don't teach you is the 4 keys to creating amazing images.

And in this photography tutorial I'll share what they are and the exact order you need to master them so you can learn photography faster.

Step 1: What Is Photography? Understanding Light

Before we get into the 4 keys, there's one foundational concept no one teaches and that's what photography actually is.

So, photography comes from two Greek words... "photo" means light and "graphy" means painting. So photography means painting with light.

And this is the foundation for everything that comes next.

Now, before you worry about what camera to buy... use what you have. Even a smartphone works.

If you already own a camera, whatever it is, it's good enough to learn photography. If you don't have one yet, don't let that stop you.

Gear just captures light. It doesn't teach you to see it.

Step 2: Master Exposure (ISO, Aperture, Shutter Speed)

The first key or the first step to creating amazing images is exposure.

This is how you control light using three camera settings: shutter speed, aperture, and ISO.

Every photo you'll ever create depends on understanding this relationship.

This is where you need to slow down and learn it properly. Because any bad habits you make will follow you for years and I know this from experience.

If your exposure isn't intentional... and you don't understand WHY you're choosing these three camera settings...

Everything else becomes guesswork, which will lead to frustration.

So don't skip ahead until this foundation is rock solid.

Step 3: Understanding Light Quality in Photography

This next step is where your photography will begin to transform from ordinary to extraordinary.

We talked about light and exposure previously, but, light is more than just exposure.

You need to learn and understand the four characteristics of light and the three behaviors of light, all of which can shape your subject and help you achieve your creative vision.

And you also need to be aware of the color of light. Because the color can change from the middle of the afternoon to later in the day and change again during sunrise or sunset.

And then indoors, that color of light changes again, depending on the type of lightbulbs in the room.

Understanding the qualities, behaviors and color of light will transform how you see and create photos.

Step 4: Photography Composition Basics

The next step is to learn and apply composition to your images.

Now keep this in mind, because I wish I'd understood this when I started...

Amazing photos don't start with camera settings - they start with seeing.

Once you understand light and composition, something shifts. The camera settings stop feeling like guesswork because you can see the photo you're trying to create.

And your images will improve faster than any gear upgrade ever will.

Step 5: Photo Editing for Beginners

Once you understand and can implement those three keys, you're ready to tackle the fourth and final key - editing, which is the icing on the cake.

But remember... you can't edit a bad photo and make it a good one.

Editing is about finishing the decisions you already made when you pressed the shutter.

Start with your best images. Don't waste time trying to fix bad ones.
