I recommend having any type of DSLR camera.  A DSLR camera is one in which you can interchange different lenses.

Don’t have a DSLR yet?  You can still learn 2 of the main components of all photographers: Light and Composition. 

Start with those and use your smartphone to master those 2 key elements.  Then, you can take your skills to the next level with a purchase of a DSLR.
